Almanacs and Encyclopedias:
  • The 50 States of the United States: Capital Cities and Information Links This site about the states and the U.S. commonwealths and territories has information about location, birds, colleges and universities, constitutions, flowers, mottoes, national forests and parks, newspapers, nicknames, populations, state and federal Representatives, songs and much more.
  • Information Please Almanac: You can browse by topic or search. Also included are the Random House Webster’s College Dictionary and the Columbia Encyclopedia.
  • The Old Farmer's Almanac: Like the print version, the online version includes information about astronomical events, weather conditions and forecasts, recipes, and gardening tips.
  • Britannica Online: Search and read the full text of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. A search on Britannica’s site will produce results from the Encyclopedia, as well as Britannica’s directory of web sites, selected articles from magazines like Newsweek, and a version of Books in Print.
  • The Columbia Encyclopedia: Sixth Edition This version of the current (year 2000) edition of the Columbia Encyclopedia is a one volume, short-entry encyclopedia with over 50,000 entries.
  • Encarta: An abridged version of the software product.

  • Buscabiografias This Spanish-language resource contains biographies of famous people from all over the world. Biographies are included on royalty and world leaders, writers, actors, musicians and singers, artists, athletes, philosophers, and scientists.
  • Find a Grave Contains information about “Where everybody who was anybody is buried…” Includes photos. Searchable by name, location, birth dates and death dates.
  • The Nobel Prize Internet Archive Provides a collection of information about all of the past Nobel Laureates, organized by prize and year. Entries include brief biographical information plus links to related Internet sites.
  • Presidents of the United States (POTUS) Contains all the information you may need about all 41 presidents. You can locate biographies, speeches, and writings and where possible, audio and video clips, election results, odd facts and presidential term highlights. Also included are First ladies, cabinet members, and additional important members of presidential life.
  • MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive Contains a collection of over 1000 biographies of mathematicians and other math related information.

  • Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary This dictionary and thesaurus, based on the Merriam-Webster dictionary, allows use of advanced search techniques including wildcards and truncation. A help page and pronunciation guide is included.
  • allwords.com This dictionary contains all definitions in English. Also provides the ability to search for a word in English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish. Additionally, there is a pronunciation file for each English word.
  • Cambridge International Dictionaries The idiom dictionary provides examples of over 7,000 idioms currently used in American, British and Australian English. This site includes thousands of example sentences, and etymological information to help readers understand the meanings of the idioms.
  • Dictionary.com A general English-language dictionary online. Its simple search form hides a sophisticated multi-source search of Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, WordNet, The Free Online Dictionary of Computing, Jargon File, The Elements, Easton’s 1897 Bible Dictionary, Hitchcock’s Bible Names Dictionary, U.S. Gazetteer, and the CIA World Factbook.

  • CIA World Factbook Provides Quick facts on countries of the world and is compiled annually by the CIA for the use of U.S. Government officials. Facts cover such topics as geography, political conditions, populations, land, and industries. Includes appendix of acronyms and definitions.
  • Country Reports.org Profiles the nations of the world and includes maps, flags and national anthems. Also included are thousands of pages of text written about these nations.

  • National Library of Medicine World’s largest medical library.
  • Clinical Trials.gov Provides regularly updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research in human volunteers. Gives information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details.
  • Alternative Medicine Homepage Sources of information on unconventional, unorthodox, unproven, or alternative, complementary, innovative, integrative therapies. It provides links to other alternative medicine sites, including several research centers.
  • Ask Dr. Weil This popular question-and-answer publication focusing on natural and preventive medicine is authored by UA College of Medicine faculty member, Andrew Weil.
  • Holistic-online.com This very comprehensive website about holistic and complementary medicine offers information about herbs, diseases and conditions, alternative therapies, a preferred provider directory, warnings about commonly used substances, and links to databases.
  • American Diabetes Association This resource offers general information on diabetes, information on healthy living, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, links to community resources and information for professionals.
  • Arizona Diabetes Control Program Maintained by the Arizona Department of Public Health, this website offers diabetes warning signs, free literature, a flu alert, advocacy, and information in Spanish as well.
  • Center for Disease Control and Prevention This site includes health and safety topics, data and statistics, and information on public health issues.

  • ABCNews.Com ABC’s news site features recaps and transcripts and selected video clips from both national and international news. Also provided are news programs, including Nightline, 20/20, and PrimeTime Live.
  • BBC News The site is updated daily and includes these sections: World, UK, UK Politics, Education, Health, Business, Sci/Tech, Sports, and Entertainment. News is available in several languages and in audio and video.
  • CBS Sportsline This site will keep you up-to-date about all sporting events, including news, standings, box scores, injury reports, statistics, and game recaps. Included are all professional sports, college sports and much more.

  • Quoteland.com This site contains sections of literary and humorous quotations. Discussion groups are available for visitors to share favorite quotes or find the source of a quote.

  • The Internet Public Library – The IPL General Reference Collection is a collection of Internet resources chosen to help answer specific questions quickly and efficiently. Sources are selected according to ease of use, quality and quantity of information, frequency of updating, and authoritativeness.
  • Refdesk.com – VERY comprehensive site of resources. It is the winner of several awards from Yahoo, Forbes, and U.S. News & World Report. There are links from this site to hundreds of information providers.
  • Internet Library for Librarians – Provides links to ready reference resources such as almanacs, biographies, dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, maps, news, thesauri, and weather.
